Facebook is a social networking website that first was started to connect college students. In the world of Web 2.0 social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace play a major role in organizing and informing people about issues and candidates.
Elections
In September 2006, Facebook launched the elections tab in a bid to increase student involvement in state and national politics. Political candidates were given special profile pages with which they could reach out to supporters in the Facebook user base. Facebook users could add these candidates to their list of supported politicians, a separate process from existing friend system, and could create special election issue groups to champion their favorite causes.
