Fiscal Sponsorships

As part of our mission to support progressive organizations, the New Organizing Institute Education Fund (NOIEF) offers a variety of fiscal sponsorship opportunities for groups who have yet to receive their 501(c)(3) status. Below, you can find all the information on how fiscal sponsorships work, what services we offer, and how to request a fiscal sponsorship from NOI.

Being a fiscal sponsoree of NOIEF has been an excellent experience for our organization.  They are consistently organized, responsive, friendly, and stable.... what more could you ask for in a sponsor?

Why Be Fiscally Sponsored? Fiscal Sponsorships are arrangements that allow associations or corporations who have yet to receive their 501(c)(3) tax determination from the IRS to indirectly receive donations from foundations and others who are allowed to donate to 501(c)(3) organizations only. A fiscal sponsorship is a way for a group without a 501(c)(3) determination to effectively borrow NOIEF's 501(c)(3) status! Borrowing our 501(c)(3) status has the potential to open up new sources of funding.

How Does A Fiscal Sponsorship Work? Your group and NOIEF enter into a fiscal sponsorship agreement. Foundations, organizations, and individuals can make 501(c)(3) contributions to NOIEF on your behalf. We then re-grant these funds-subject to an administrative fee-to your group. We also require that you provide us with periodic reports on your spending of re-granted funds.

Is My Group Eligible? We provide fiscal sponsorships to groups engaged in work that would otherwise comply with the requirements of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. So long as your group is engaged in 501(c)(3)-compliant work-and so long as you spend the money NOIEF re-grants to your group in a 501(c)(3)-compliant way-then your group may be eligible for NOIEF's fiscal sponsorship program. What Does A Fiscal Sponsorship Get Me? Good question. Fundamentally, becoming an NOIEF fiscal sponsoree means that you become eligible to receive funding from sources that are not otherwise available to you. Foundations like [EXAMPLES OF C3 ONLY FOUNDATIONS] are barred from giving to groups that lack 501(c)(3) determination. As your fiscal sponsor, NOIEF provides the necessary 501(c)(3) status, allowing you to receive funding that would otherwise be inaccessible.

NOIEF offers different levels of service with its fiscal sponsorship agreements.

  • Basic Fiscal Sponsorship - NOIEF will promptly process any funds granted to NOIEF on your behalf and mail you a check for re-granted funds. 5% service fee applied to each grant processed.
  • FS + Online Donations - In addition to the basic fiscal sponsorship, NOIEF will also collect online donations on your behalf. We will promptly process and re-grant these to you. 7% service fee applied to each grant processed.
  • FS + Wire Transfers - Funds donated to NOIEF on your behalf under the basic fiscal sponsorship model will be re-granted through wire transfer. 7% service fee applied to each grant processed.
  • Incubation - Incubation is a more involved than normal fiscal sponsorships. NOIEF is not currently incubating any group or project but NOIEF is interested in exploring incubation opportunities with interested groups on a case-by-case basis.
  • Custom - NOIEF is willing to customize fiscal sponsorship agreements to suit your association or corporation's needs. The details of these agreements as well as their service charges will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
