NOI Summer Campaign Boot Camp Class of 2007
Gregory (Greg) Buckland (MA)
Originally from the Boston area, I have spent the last 6 years getting an undergraduate degree, working the 2006 midterm elections, and traveling through South America. From 2001 to 2006, I worked on a Bachelors of Arts in Neurobiology from Harvard. I spent a semester off in the fall of 2003 in the wilderness with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) based in Wyoming. I took another semester in the fall of 2005 to work full time toward the completion of my senior thesis studying the visual system in Zebrafish. After graduating in June 2006 I took some time to travel and relax before diving into the 2006 election cycle. I volunteered for Tammy Duckworth (candidate for US Congress in Illinois) and Deval Patrick (now governor of Massachusetts) before taking a full time job for the closing months of the elections as a field organizer for (now US Senator) Sheldon Whitehouse and the Rhode Island Democratic Party. Feeling grateful for having been a part of such a historic election and moment of change for the US, I left for a 7 month journey through South America. During travels through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia, I have studied Spanish language, Latin-American culture and history, and worked on a couple of organic farms learning alternative agriculture methods. I'm returning to Boston in late June looking forward to NOI's summer bootcamp and jumping into the 2008 campaign series with both feet.

I graduated from the University of Southern California in 2005 with a degree in Communication, and I decided to spend my next year traveling around the world. For 13 months I went from Italy to Japan, and in between I taught English in rural Thailand, worked at an orphanage in Nepal, and learned from the people I met about what our modern world is truly like, and how it is changing so quickly. Stephen Ekema-Agbaw (PA)
I am a recent graduate of Lafayette College where I majored in political science, with a minor in philosophy. While at Lafayette College I was a member of the track and field team, of which I was named captain in my senior season, as well as many other clubs and organizations that I have listed on my resume. I was very fortunate in my senior year to be afforded the opportunity to participate in the Easton, PA community where I went to school. I was able to work in the community as an employee of Gap Inc. as well as volunteer my services with the Boys and Girls club, an endeavor I found most rewarding. However, it was during this time that I realized the extent to which I was a, self-titled, “campaign junkie.” Working for the democratic party of Easton, PA, as well as for democrat Michael Fleck’s campaign for Easton mayor, opened my eyes to the excitement and hardship that is political campaigning. Personally I hope to eventually go to law school and continue pursuing higher education with the goal of someday going back to my ancestral country of Cameroon, Africa and helping the people by changing the political system.

Julielyn Gibbons (MI)
Struck with a particularly severe case of Crohn's Disease at the age of 14, I discovered progressive activism as a means of helping others and myself. Despite over 70 hospitalizations and 35 surgeries in the last 13 years, I have overcome my illness to discover my life's role as progressive advocate for others. By hard work and determination, I graduated high school with the rest of my class in 1998, and went on to college, despite my poor health. I studied Interpersonal Communication and Political Science. While I have had to leave college temporarily in order to maintain my health insurance, I have turned my life's experience into a role of serving Michigan's citizens through online activism. Besides contributing regularly on three political blogs here in Michigan, I provide a face to Michigan's progressive blogging community. I am constantly looking to improve relations between the Netroots and the rest of the state, whether it's at a DFA Meeting, local club event, or on my weekly radio segment. I look forward to being able to better serve Michigan and it's people through a long career in progressive online activism.

After spending 10 years in the corporate work force, I decided that there had to be more to making a difference in the world than earning a paycheck. I spent the next several years working for companies with socially responsible agendas and missions. I soon discovered that making a difference required more than an idealists mission statement, it required action. In 2003, I decided to attend college in attempt to better understand social justice and the political system, and in 2007 I became the first member of my family to earn a college degree. Combined with my leadership and technology experience, my degree in Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics and Government serves to make me an outstanding candidate for organizations that are unafraid to leverage the dynamic nature of the Internet and social networking to organize and to make a difference.

Margaret Hansbrough (MO)
Summing up who I think I am in a paragraph is impossible but hopefully I can at least get across a few things. As cynical as times like these can make me I firmly believe in the democratic political process as a fundamental part of social change and progress on a local and global level. This is why I want to be a part of this campaign season in particular because for the first time in my life I don’t have anything tying me down and I feel confident in my knowledge, skills, and talents as a political organizer so much so that I know I will be useful to any campaign that I join. Politics is not a game or a competitive thing for me. Its about the lives of people I know and love and the lives of people I have yet to meet or may never meet but whom I am connected to because we are all apart of the same creation. I take elections and the process in general very personally but I know that a professional and calculated approach is needed at all times to win and to effect change. Passion and humor are two of the more overwhelming characteristics that people observe in me and they are how I best connect to people. Every effort I make towards social change is out of a desire to serve my family, friends, fellow citizens, and first and foremost God and all the ways God manifests on this Earth.

Elizabeth Heavener (VA)
I am a young woman with big dreams, deep passion and lots of energy. I was born outside Philadelphia into a Mennonite family that is deeply rooted in the traditions of the religion. I am outgoing, love a good debate and am very comfortable speaking in front of crowds. Playing eleven years on field hockey teams has taught me the importance of teamwork and how rewarding shared accomplishments can be. I love traveling, meeting people, and learning about their lives while sharing pieces of my own life journey. Living for eight weeks in a rural village in Honduras while working with malnourished children was the greatest challenge I have faced. It was also the most rewarding experience of my life. I am always ready for an adventure and have often taken calculated risks. I have high morals; and when I chose to stand behind something, I wholeheartedly do so. My departure from undergraduate studies was highlighted by my student commencement speech to an audience of over 4,000 people. Politics is my passion. The result of the upcoming election will have a profound impact on the United States and the international community, and I look forward to participating in this process!

I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as the oldest of four children. I enjoyed a sheltered childhood in a small suburb of the city, but by high school was ready to get out a see a bit more of the world. I attended Dominican High School, a unique, diverse, college prepartory school in Whitefish Bay. There, I was involved in student government, campus ministry, and inner city service opportunities that were formative in shaping my world view. As a senior, I was student body president, had leads in the school plays, and had helped start an urban garden in inner city Milwaukee. During the summers of my high school years, I was a camp counselor at YMCA Camp Minikani. As a participant in their leadership training program, I had three years of intense leadership experience in a residential camp setting. I attended college at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Upon acceptance, I was awarded the Service Fellowship which required 10 hours of community service each week throughout my college career. This integrated my college experience with larger community engagement, making grassroots empowerment an important part of my college experience. In addition, I had the opportunity to study in both Rome, Italy and Kumasi, Ghana during my undergraduate education. I was involved in organizing service opportunities, planning retreats and other reflection programs on campus, and furthering students' understanding of social justice. After college, I was excited and passionate about moving to Washington, DC to explore how I could integrate a message of peace and justice into political work.. I have spent the past year living in intentional community as a Sojourners intern here in D.C. As a development intern, I have learned about fundraising and budget issues of non-profits which has increased my understanding of the challenges of managing a non-profit organization. I have also continued to engage in organizing opportunities when they are available. At this point, I am passionate about empowering the public to make a difference because they have the chance to do so. I am anxiously anticipating my next step.

Ali Latifi (CA)
When I was born in Kabul my world was in the midst of what were supposed to be chic political upheavals – the Russians in Afghanistan and the Ayatollah in Iran, instead revolution gave way to regret. Since then I've only heard stories of a homeland I had to flee at the age of three. Twenty one years later and not much has changed, but now I spend my days trying to figure out the world and its web of political games. I live in world of western/eastern (whatever that means) dichotomies. I wouldn't support the Shah but I wouldn't welcome the Ayatollah with open arms either. What's a politically progressive but culturally-grounded Afghan to do? The best answer I could come up with is to work in solidarity, so that’s what I did. In acts of solidarity I spoke out against the war in Iraq throughout the streets of San Francisco, attended and photographically documented the May 2006 “day without immigrants” march in Santa Cruz, worked on graphic and web design for the Reelwork Labor Film Festival in Santa Cruz, and I decided to use my media savvy to help the Center for Asian American Media create a website that fosters interactivity and engagement from their audience.

Catherine (Kate) Rauseo (MA)
I am currently a senior at Providence College and I will soon graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Social Science. I am interested in the media aspect of politics, and this program sounds like a wonderful opportunity to learn more about this field. In preparation for a career the media industry I have gained ample experience at the College level. I have recently helped to launch a student run television station at Providence College, PCTV 52. In addition to the work I completed in order to gain the College’s approval of the station, I am now charged with directing the station’s News Department which includes a “News Show” for which I produce, write, and report. I have also gained experience in the local broadcast field through an internship with WPRI WNAC-TV in East Providence. As a News Intern during the spring of 2006 I was given first hand experience in the field as I was frequently sent out to accompany photographers in conducting interviews and gaining background information and footage for the evening broadcast. I returned to WPRI this spring as an intern for the station’s consumer affairs and investigative reporter. I also act as a Communications Intern for the Diocese of Providence’s Offices of Communications and Telecommunications. There, I assist the Director of Public Relations with writing press releases and news advisories, I edit tape to air on the Catholic Cable Channel, and I write for the Diocesan newspaper, The Visitor. I also write for the College’s student newspaper, The Cowl, alumni newspaper, The Digest, and faculty newspaper, The Spectrum.

Jerimee Richir (NC)
Jerimee Richir spent his early years living in Caroline County, Virginia. Jerimee attended the College of William and Mary and in 2002 received a Bachelor's of Philosophy. Jerimee's interest in social justice and politics was well received at William and Mary, where he was a founding member of several community organizing groups and ran a weekly radio show on world politics. After leaving William and Mary, Jerimee was trained as a field organizer with the Prince George County office of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). In 2004, wanting to take on the challenge of a battleground state in a crucial presidential election, he moved to Florida to assist ACORN's historic ballot initiative to raise the state's minimum wage. After having successfully raised Florida's minimum wage, Richir took on the challenge of building new offices in Charlotte and Raleigh. After having helped working class NC ACORN members to build their statewide organization to include over 3,000 families, he left to pursue online organizing. Richir was hired by the North Carolina Democratic Party to serve as their Online Communications Director in March of this year. He now serves the party by developing online platforms to advance progressive goals.

Ryan Roach (MA)
I consider my self to be a rational and fair-minded progressive that is politically astute, active, and engaged. I am the product of a very proud ethnic family in Massachusetts. I’m a recent graduate of the University of New Haven majoring in Political Science. While at the University of New Haven, I founded and organized the University of New Haven College Democrats. I have a profound interest in the process of campaigns and campaign politics due to the impact they may have on such things as Unions, Laws, and the average Middle Class Family, for good or bad. As I embark on a career in Political Campaigns and Public Service, I will not hesitate to work with those on the other side of the political spectrum in order to get things done. My commitment to progressive values will continue to motivate my career and my vision to help those in need.

Sondra Spaulding (DC)
I have been heavily involved in political campaigns throughout high school and college. When I came to Howard University in 2003 I started getting involved in campaigns on campus. I was involved in student presidential campaigns and served as the campaign secretary for an Undergraduate Trustee campaign. In DC I have worked on the Linda Crop For Mayor Campaign, Albert Wynn For Congress Campaign, and Hillary Clinton's re-election campaign for senator. In each of these campaigns I dealt with the grassroots aspect of the campaign by going door to door canvassing, attending events in the neighborhoods, and talking to the constituents personally about the candidate. Last summer I was part of the New Leaders Program under the Center For Progressive Leadership. I interned at the National AIDS and Housing Coalition through this program as well as attended several seminars and trainings about progressive politics. I am a graduating senior seeking any experiences, trainings, or jobs in the political arena. I believe that I have accomplished much in the political arena and hope to learn and accomplish much more. I am a very hard and enthusiastic worker who is passionate about progressive politics and always love to learn new aspects of politics.

Nicole Trudell-Moore (OH)
I am a senior majoring in political science at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Upon entering college, I didn’t know what career path I wanted to pursue. Observing the day-to-day struggles of neighbors, friends, and family has influenced me profoundly. Two years ago, I joined other family members of disabled children in testifying before the Human Services Subcommittee at the Ohio Statehouse, where we won the restoration of full funding to the Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps (after Gov. Taft proposed further cuts to the program). This experience was one of many that showed me that participation in our government by average citizens can truly improve people’s lives. I want to spend my life working to elect progressive candidates who will use their voices to protect the most vulnerable of our citizens.

Greg Williams (TN)
I am extremely passionate primarily about three points: progressive public policy issues and politics; sports; and my nephews; however, not necessarily in that order. While in graduate school, I very much enjoyed researching public policy issues and teaching undergraduate courses. Additionally, I enjoyed teaching high school students via Junior Achievement. Perhaps as fulfilling as any other personal moments, however, were coaching ball teams -- two years of University of Tennessee Ladies Intramural Basketball / Softball champions and five years of Little League Baseball season champions. My American Red Cross leadership experience helped me to develop a deep appreciation for John Edwards’ “populist” message, such as the battle against poverty and the income disparity in America. During the 2004 presidential campaign and with General Wesley Clark, I gained my first major political campaign experience. For many years, hence (before and since), I have been exceptionally active with local Democratic Party politics.

Edwin Zambrano (DC)
If there were only one way to describe my life, it would be different aspects of hunger as Richard Wright explained in his novel Black Boy “All my life I had been full of a hunger for a new way to live.” My name is Edwin Zambrano, born in Venezuela and raised in the Dominican Republic. I migrated to the United States at the age of fourteen with my mother, brother and sisters. Because of my leadership involvements and my academic achievements, I received a full scholarship to Ramapo College of New Jersey where I graduated with Latin honors; earning a triple degrees in International Business, International Studies and Spanish Language Studies, with a minor in Latin America Studies. One of the main reasons that we migrated to the United States was seeking opportunities and more importantly searching for a new beginning. Growing up in a single household, which is the case in many Latino families in the United States, made me view things different and appreciates every opportunity given. All my life has been full of a hunger for a more stable life for my family and myself. My mother have been working hard to provide us with that new beginning, now as a young adult, it is my responsibility to continue my mother’s battle. As a young leader, I was featured as the main Latino speaker in several national conferences, including at the New American Youth in New York sponsored by New School University, which served as a mentor to other young immigrants in New York City. One of my goals and passions, as a post-graduated student, is to encourage young and adults Hispanics in the United States to become global citizens and leaders of tomorrow. Currently, I am doing a fellowship program (Miguel Contreras Labor & Advocacy Fellowship) at the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, one of the constituency organizations that work with the AFL-CIO and Chance to Wins. One of my career goals is to become a political organizer and encourage members of my community to participate in the decision making of this country. Latino is the youngest and fastest growing population in the United States, therefore, I see an important need to engage the youth in decision-making and civic participation through a progressive agenda. Hispanic youth account for more than 34% of the total U.S. Hispanic population and eventually, they will play a key factor in the upcoming elections. “I would like to enhance the number of Latino voters; particularly the young population because at the long run will they will become leaders of their communities. Therefore, I will continue pledging for the development of the program through my career objective. My career objective is to become a political organizer and ultimately serve as a voice for my community.”
