Jeff Zetino, an organizer for Promise Arizona, has been active in Arizona since April 2010. Jeff started with two organizers to work on immigration issues, and now, with the help of his community, Jeff's work has grown into a fully staffed and nationally recognized organization. Promise Arizona is now considered one of the leading organizations in the immigration reform movement.
On July 28th, Promise Arizona, a group involved in the Civic Engagement Organizing project (CEO), organized direct actions against the unjust laws affecting their community in Arizona. Since early May, when SB 1070 was first signed, the group has been organizing vigils and community members who are concerned about the law, modeling how to organize to stop fear and to fight for justice. The CEO project believes that, in order to enact real change, organizing does not stop on Election Day. In order to be effective on and beyond Election Day, organizers, like Jeff, have been enacting the engagement model in Phoenix. Promise Arizona organizers have been meeting with volunteer leaders and community members to discuss change and powerful days of action. These discussions have led to action in the community with voter registration . However, voter registration is only a tactic. Organizers recognize that if they invest in the community by building long term relationships, they will create a community of real leaders who will fight with them for solutions to injustice and withstand as a powerful voice that will not be ignored but heard in every election.
